「喫茶店ってのは"場所代"が含まれとるからやねん」
大学時代のことである。「喫茶店はなぜあんなに高いのか？」という私の問いに対して、友人はそう返答した。これは名言だと、私はその時思った。
10月中旬、朝から降っていた雨が上がり、キンモクセイがかぐわしい香りを放っていた。私は自転車を走らせて"グランチェスター"に入った。小牧市で名を馳せている喫茶店である。
2人用の席に案内され低い椅子に腰かけた。店内は広い。白と黒と茶色を基調としている。上を見上げると天井の高いこと。ドローンを飛ばせそうなくらい（もちろん本当には飛ばさない）開放感がある。私の目の前にはグランドピアノが構えていた。その黒は厳かさがあり、燦然と輝いているように見える。

★ナスとボロネーゼの焼きパスタ 970円
私がパスタで知っているのはカルボナーラとペペロンチーノくらいである。ボロネーゼが何たるかを知らない。
小さく深い器で料理がやってきた。挽き肉とナス、チーズ、ゆで卵。トマトベースのソースだろう。たぶん。その下にみっちりパスタが詰められている。ミニサラダもついてきた。ごまドレッシングがかかっている。
フォークでパスタをすくいあげた。ソースをからめながら食べていった。グラタンのように表面がチーズで焼かれているのが美味しい。

BGMからは管楽器の音色が聞こえる。その音色に動かされるようにお客さんたちは軽快に会話を交わしている。ご夫婦もいれば女性友だち同士もいるように見える。あの方々はカップルか親子か、どっちだろう。店員さんたちは背筋を伸ばし、テーブルの間をテキパキと動き回っている。
牛丼屋とは異なり喫茶店は時間をそれほど気にせずくつろいでいられる。ここはWifiも使える。レビューも書いてしまおう。本も読もうかな。
雰囲気が場所代以上の価値を持ち、970円以上の値打ちがある喫茶店かもしれない。そう思った。このままここで一眠りしたくさえなってきた。
