母は言いました。「あたし甘いカレーが食べたいの。ナンが好きだから、ナンのお店ね。あの蕎麦屋の斉とうのそばにあるインド料理屋さんがいいの」
というわけで訪れました。子供たち(みんな50代の大人)がつれて行ってくれる店はどこも辛いのが不満だったといいます(もっと早く言ってくれ)。ナンがあって甘いカレーが食べたいのだと。
こういうリクエストがあるから、町印度は繁盛するわけですね。つまりは老若男女を問わぬリクエストに応えられるファミリー向けの存在として、町印度には支持される理由があります。これもある種の日本社会が培った日本文化だと思います。
世の中の大半の人は、名店なぞには全く興味がなくて、たぶんこんな町印度のナンカレーが最大公約数で最高のニーズなのでしょう。これまでの親に対する名店案内を反省したのでした。まもなく齢八十を数えようとする年寄りには、本格的とか名店とか、そんなことはどうでもいいのです。母は大好きなパンの一種であるナンと、甘くて食べやすい甘口カレーが食べたかっただけです。インドだネパールだとか、バスマティライスだとかどうでもいいのです。
そう、いろいろ余計な趣味を人にお勧めするものではないなと、今さら気付かされました。
今日は普通のナンカレー。母はチキンマッシュルームカレーには、マッシュルームがふんだんに入っていてとても美味しいと喜びます。
店内を見ると飾りがネパール文化です。店員さんたちはネパールの方だし、メニューも最初の方は、モモとか、チャウミンとか、バトマスサデコとか美味しそうなネパール料理が並びます。でも、歯の弱い年寄りには向かないし、とにかくニーズはナンカレーだったので、今日は従いました。
おかげで、いろんな会話を交わしました。こんな年になって、こんなに多く親と食事を共にする機会を持つようになるとは、過去数十年にわたって思いもしませんでした。
そして、どんな名店よりも、どんな新たな新風吹き込む新進気鋭のカレーよりも、町印度こそ、年寄りが受け入れやすい普遍の存在だと思い知らされた晩なのでした。
