これは実際にあった出来事です。
本場の麻婆豆腐をネットで検索中、偶然この店を見つけました。
日曜・祝日も営業と記してあり、休みを利用して訪問したのです。
看板の説明文によると、店主は中国山東省のホテルで14年間、
北京料理の料理長を務めた人物だとか。
四川料理ではないのが残念。しかし自信のある献立の如く
[辛さ3段階 麻婆豆腐]と掲示してあるので期待して扉を開きます。
「ギ、ギ、ギィィィィィィィィィィィィィィィィ」
薄暗い店を切り盛りするのは中国人の夫婦。
接客係の夫人は、若干イントネーションに違和感はあるものの
日本語が不得手では無いようです。
献立表の昼定食から、麻婆豆腐ランチ780円を選択。
「思い切り辛くできますか？」と夫人に尋ねると、
「はい、できます」とだけ答え、スーッと厨房に消えました。
配膳されたランチは麻婆豆腐、白飯、中華スープ、
夥しい量の千切りキャベツ、そして切り刻まれた漬物の茎。
「辛くして･･･」と懇願したはずの麻婆豆腐は、
私の舌がおかしいのか、辛さを感じることができません。
舌を麻痺させる花椒は使っていないのだろう。
豆板醤と辣油に含まれる唐辛子だけが、幽かに舌を刺激するのみです。
しかし濃厚な味噌のコクと強い塩気のせいでしょうか。
白飯を掻き込む手が止まりません。
「か、からだの自由が利かないっ」
このままでは茶碗が空になってしまう。
お替りは可能か否か？
夫人に助けを求めたところ、「はい」と応じてくれました。

すべてが終わり、780円を支払うためレジへ。
財布の中の硬貨を数えていた私の耳に、身の毛もよだつ声が！
夫人「（ブツブツ）ランチの･･･辛さが･･･お替りで･･･
しめて980円になります」
私 「ギャァ━━il|liﾉ)ﾟДﾟ(ヽil|li━━ァァッ!!!」
辛くできるかを聞いたときも、お替りを頼んだときも、
追加料金が必要だという説明は一切ありませんでした。
なのに、いきなり980円を請求され、恐ろしくなったのです。
言われるがまま代金を支払い、振り返らず店を出た私は、
無我夢中で走って、走って、走って。
電停に人影を見たとたん、ホッとして座り込んでしまいました。
「お兄さん、顔が真っ青だよ」
市電を待っていた初老の紳士に声をかけられ、我に返りました。
私はさっき体験したことを、息もつかずに話しました。
うんうんと頷きながら、穏やかな表情で聞いていた紳士は、
私の話が終わるなり、突然真顔になったかと思うと
「ほう、で、その料理店の夫人というのは･･･
こんな顔かいぃぃぃぃぃぃぃぃぃぃぃぃぃぃぃぃい？」
