Today (Tuesday, December 26, 2023), I had lunch at "Al Mandrino" in Otemachi, Naka-ku, Hiroshima City. Rather than being in Otemachi, this restaurant is in the basement of the "Okasan Securities" building, which I think is easy for people in Hiroshima to understand. The restaurant was founded in 1978 (Showa 53), and can now be considered a long-established store. It is close to my age, and when I think of a store of that age being treated as a long-established store, I feel my own age. I had vaguely known about the store's existence, but when I think of my parents' house as the basement, I have not been able to use it for many years, probably because it is a store in the basement of the next town over. The other day, when I was returning to Hatchobori from "Penguin" in Takanobashi, I happened to notice a menu posted in front of a building and was interested in it. I arrived at the restaurant at noon. When I went down to the basement, the atmosphere was classical from the outside, and when I entered the restaurant, the atmosphere was just as classical. I think this kind of restaurant is rare in Hiroshima City. I went there alone without making a reservation, but I was somehow guided to a table closest to the door. This time, it was my first time to visit for lunch, so I decided to start by ordering the "Pasta Lunch", which is the best value. Anyway, my order was as follows: "Pasta Lunch" (with salad, soup, homemade focaccia, free refills. Coffee or tea. 1,500 yen) Pasta is "Linguine Genovese (green beans and potatoes with basil sauce)" (plus 150 yen) -- that's it. For details on the menu mentioned above, please refer to the pictures. As the saying goes, "seeing is believing." The family who came after me had given up because there were no seats. Since it is a popular restaurant, I recommend making a reservation in advance. First, you order, and in about 7 minutes, "Balsamic vinegar salad", "Homemade focaccia", and "Cauliflower soup" arrive. The salad is rich in variety and color, not only lettuce but also beans, peas, red radish, apples, cherry tomatoes, etc. The focaccia comes with olive oil. The soup is served in a small cup. (After the pasta arrives, I order another serving of "homemade focaccia".) The pasta arrives 9 minutes later. It's been a long time since I've eaten "Genovese", but this is a dish that is faithful to the basics and is not ostentatious, as you would expect from a long-established restaurant. Classical is not only seen in the exterior and interior, but also in the service of the staff and the taste of the food. I love this kind of restaurant. After eating the pasta, I had a little extra in my stomach, so I decided to order a salad. I was surprised that the salad I ordered was of the same quality and quantity as the first salad - if anything, the presentation was more luxurious. Even though it was the most economical "Pasta Lunch", the food and service were impeccable, which was the best thing about it. We finished off with a hot coffee, and it was a real treat. The quality and quantity of the food, the polite service, and the relaxed atmosphere made the 1,650 yen a real bargain. If "Il Nebbio" was innovative, then "Al Mandrino" was traditional. Anyway (I repeat myself) it was a treat.
