厳島神社を出て大願寺から大聖院に向かう道には多くの参拝客が歩いていました。
そんな中、「岩村もみじ屋」さんの店頭で“もみじまんじゅう”を美味しそうに食べている人が大勢いたので便乗する事に。
岩村もみじ屋さんは明治末期に創業した“もみじ饅頭”の老舗。
こしあんと粒あんの2種類のもみじ饅頭を扱っています。
粒あん入りのもみじ饅頭は昭和9年に高松宮殿下が厳島を訪問された際。
初代店主の岩村栄吉に「粒あん入りのもみじ饅頭がつくれないか」と提案したことがきっかけとなり“粒もみじ”が生まれたそうです。
粒あんの“もみじまんじゅう”は1988年には全国菓子大博覧会で名誉会長賞を受賞。
冷たいお茶のサービスもあったので店頭のベンチに座って食べました。
焼き立て熱々のもみじ饅頭は、ふんわりとしたカステラ生地と粒々感のある甘い粒餡が絶妙にマッチしていて美味しい。
お茶はさっぱりとしていて甘いもみじ饅頭と相性が良かったです。
店員さんも親切丁寧で宮島の良い思い出になりました。
