I made a promise to go out drinking with a friend. So, where should I go? There is a restaurant that my friend often goes to. The truth is, I haven't had much of an appetite lately... I'm hungry, but I end up leaving my dinner on the table. (I was debating whether to turn it down or not.) I arrived first, and sat there staring blankly at the menu, choosing something I could eat, when my friend arrived. He had a beer, and I had a red eye. Well, we had the standard sashimi platter, and they had sweetfish, so I ordered grilled sweetfish. My friend ordered chicken skin with ponzu sauce and octopus carpaccio. Hmm? ... Chinese yam gratin? It's unusual, so I ordered that instead of rice. The sashimi consisted of tuna, rockfish, squid, surf clam, and octopus... I wonder if the rockfish was good? Maybe the sweetfish was a little overcooked? The flesh was dry. The rest was okay too. Of particular note was the Chinese yam gratin. Well, I had assumed they'd used yam instead of macaroni, but mixing it into the bechamel sauce... took me by surprise. It used milk, and a small amount of cheese. The pepper and other spices were Western-style. And yet, just by adding yam, it somehow tasted Japanese. This whetted my appetite. I ordered some sake and some extra food. Wow, I was totally full.
