久しぶりにちゃんとした麻婆豆腐が食べたくなった。麻と辣の両方がきちんと効いているやつだ。
店に入ると、他の客もおおかた麻婆豆腐を食べている。料理が運ばれてくると、口の中によだれが満ちてくる。
まず、麻婆豆腐を頬張る。麻と辣の挟み撃ち。これだ！これぞ、麻婆豆腐。ご飯が進む。
半分くらい食べたところで、鼻水が止まらなくなって、中断。唐辛子も花椒も、街の中華の麻婆豆腐の倍以上は入っているだろう。卓上に花椒のペッパーミルが置いてあるが、手を伸ばす余裕はない。
鼻をかみつつ、周りを見ると、誰も鼻をかんでないし、なんなら花椒のペッパーミルをゴリゴリやってる人もいるし、僕の後から入店したのに食べ終わって出ていく人までいる。
ちょっと待って！どういうこと？ここはどこ？日本なの？日本人はいつからこんな辛いものに強くなったのか？
箸休めのザーサイがこんなに美味しく感じたのは初めてだ。辛さを紛らすために、ご飯をおかわり。ご飯を麻婆豆腐の器に放り込んで、ご飯で麻婆豆腐を薄める作戦で完食。
辛いはずのない卵スープまで辛く感じる。締めの杏仁豆腐が泣けるほど美味しい
