加藤清正が築城して420年となる熊本城近く、夜の繁華街となる栄通りに並行する銀杏仲通りある、創業60年の老舗喫茶店。年中無休で1人で営業するオーナーマスターが、既に80歳を越えているのに驚かされる。
恐らくは日本で1軒しかない、琥珀色の珈琲。琥珀と同じように、透明でカップの底が見える。味わいは珈琲豆そのものの仄かな香り同様に、軽い舌触りと飲み越し。上品な煎茶を飲んでいるような感覚になる。
60年続けるマスターの技は、珈琲豆を軽く焙煎するため、挽く前の豆が白色に近いアイボリー。豆を焦がすことが珈琲の本質ではないと、静かに語るマスターには、長年の経験による確かな自信を感じる。
この黄金色の日本茶のような珈琲1本勝負で、60年間、年中無休で営業して来たマスター。この店は、もはや単なる喫茶店を超えた、熊本の名勝となってるのではないだろうか。
