千興ファームの馬料理店「菅乃屋」は上通店、銀座通り店、西原店、の三店舗があり、それぞれかなり性格が違う。この西原店は、広い敷地に、40台分の駐車場と、200席の収容力の建物を持つ、郊外型のレストランである。馬刺しもあるが、銀座通店ほどは力を入れていない。馬の焼肉、馬ステーキ、馬ハンバーグ、馬バーガーといった料理が中心となっている。
「馬刺し盛り合わせ」については、1人前の内容は、「特選」「上」が各2切れづつ、「赤身」「ふたえご」「こうね」が各1切れづつ、とあくまでもお試し感覚の量。ふたえごとは、あばら付近の肉で、筋肉と脂肪の部分がわりあいはっきり分かれている。舌触りよく、噛み応えがあり、甘みがあっておいしい。
「ハンバーグ」は、パン、スープ、サラダ付き。馬の挽肉を使用したこのハンバーグは、普通のおいしさ。平凡であまり特徴を感じなかった。強いて言えば、牛肉由来の独特の匂いがしないので、あっさりとした印象を与えることくらいだろうか。これを好ましく思う人と、物足りなく思う人とに分かれるかもしれない。
考えてみると、ハンバーグは、もとはタタール人の馬の生肉料理に起源があり、タルタルステーキを経てハンバーグへと発展したものである。だから、ハンバーグは馬肉のほうが由緒正しい！ などと嘯きながら食べると ひときわおいしい・・・・・・はず（笑）。
私は、このたびは少人数で、しかもあまり空腹でない状態で訪問してしまったのだが、このお店は、多めの人数のグループでお腹を空かせて訪問し、ワイワイと賑やかに盛大な馬焼肉の宴などをやるのが楽しそうであり、それが最良の利用方法なのではなかろうか、という感想を持った。
最寄りバス停は、熊本市内と阿蘇くまもと空港を結ぶバス路線上の「テクノリサーチパーク入口」停留所。そこで降りるとお店はすぐそこにある。「テクノリサーチパーク入口」バス停までは、「阿蘇くまもと空港」から2分。「益城インター口」（福岡方面からの高速バスからの乗継ぎに便利）から12分。「熊本交通センター」から32～40分。
8名以上ならお店の送迎バスが利用できるという。
