Located right next to Nishiki Market, Kyoto's kitchen. You can enjoy our specialty "Gontaro nabe" as well as udon, soba, and rice bowls in a relaxed atmosphere. |
This is a udon and soba restaurant located on Fuyacho-dori near Nishiki Market. They serve their specialty "Gontaro Nabe" using their proud "dashi" and "udon, soba and rice bowls". They also have private rooms, so you can use it for various purposes, from casual meals to banquets. The restaurant's history dates back to October 1910 (Meiji 43) when the previous owner started a soba restaurant in Osaka, and moved to Kyoto in 1946 (Showa 21). In 1960 (Showa 35), it was opened under its current name "Gontaro". This is the main store, and there are also [a:26000917, Okazaki store] and [a:26002741, Kinkakuji store]. It is located about 7 to 8 minutes from Kawaramachi Station, Karasuma Station and Shijo Station (the nearest exit to the underground passage is number 11, cross the crosswalk and go straight). From Shijo-dori, go north along Fuyacho-dori and it is on the left. A large lantern is the landmark. Visited at lunchtime. It was past 1:30pm, but it seemed busy. The restaurant is deep, with semi-private rooms to the right of the corridor leading to the back, and table seats at the back left. The second floor has sunken kotatsu seats, and the third and fourth floors are private rooms. The staff guided us to either the semi-private room closest to the entrance or a shared table. The semi-private room we were shown to had a noren curtain hanging, but it had a large table and chairs without backrests. The specifications were different from the semi-private room next door. Still, we decided it was better than sharing a table, so we chose this one. Once we sat down, it was comfortable. It was quiet and we didn't have to worry about the people next to us talking. The service was pleasant and polite. They refilled our tea when the time was right. The menu is as follows (prices include tax).・ Noodles Hot udon and soba (from 1,000 yen), cold udon and soba (from 950 yen) Okonomiyaki set meal (small mixed rice, Small dish, pickles) (+600 yen) ・Rice bowls and rice (from 1,000 yen) Ichifuku soba (+600 yen) ・Recommended set meal (from 1,900 yen) ・A la carte dishes (from 400 yen) ・Specialty Gontaro nabe (from 5,000 yen), Kyoto-style Udon-suki, drinks ・Sweets (from 450 yen) There are also seasonal items, and this season is bamboo shoots. The following was ordered. The tea was hot roasted green tea. ●[b: Kisu Karaage] (800 yen) Served with shishito peppers. The batter has a soy sauce flavor with a hint of ginger. It was seasoned to make a great snack. ●[b:Shippoku Udon] (1,450 yen) Warm udon topped with three grilled fish cakes, a triangularly cut thin omelet, shiitake mushrooms, bamboo shoots, seaweed, and mitsuba. First, take a sip of the soup. The soup, made with light soy sauce, has a slightly sweet taste and the aroma of dashi stock, which brings out the flavor of dried fish. According to the explanation, it uses Rausu kelp, three types of dried fish (urume, mackerel, and mejika), and Ako Tenshio salt. The udon is medium thick. It is soft and not chewy, and a little unsatisfying. Although the soup is delicious, the texture of the udon is disappointing. On the other hand, the chewy bamboo shoots, the sweetly simmered shiitake mushrooms, and the fragrant grilled fish cakes all combine with the flavor of the dashi stock, and were as delicious as expected. The portion was just right. The time spent was about 35 minutes. If you can accept that "Shippoku Udon" is mainly about the "dashi" and "toppings" and that the "udon" is secondary, you will be satisfied. You can look forward to the "Gontaro Nabe" and "Donburi" dishes, which allow you to enjoy the "toppings" and "dashi". Udon and soba restaurants are a rare sight as places where you can have a light meal. There is a possibility that I will return, so when I do, I will choose dishes that allow me to enjoy the "dashi" as the main ingredient.
