明治8年(1875)創業。御所南に構える高名な茶舗で、茶道三千家や茶の湯ゆかりの大徳寺などの本山御用達。今時珍しい座売りの店舗で、一服いただきながらお茶を選べる。
もともとは抹茶が主力商品のお店で、宇治川河川敷の提携自家園で栽培育成したお茶を、出荷直前に石臼で挽き上げており、店の奥からはゴロゴロと抹茶を挽く石臼の音が聞こえる。お抹茶は店頭での量り売り。
最近は高山寺の鳥獣戯画が描かれた「かりがねほうじ茶」も人気商品。
日常使いのお茶から贅沢したい時に飲みたい高級茶葉まで幅広く取り揃えており、京都のお土産にもおすすめ。四条河原町の高島屋でも購入できる。
