清浄歓喜団は密教と共に唐から伝来した菓子で、現在も密教系の寺院でお供え物として採用されているそうな。
残念な事に、江戸時代後期に、中身の餡がそれまでの原材料から小豆に変えられているそうなのだが、味付け自体は変わらないらしい。
清浄歓喜団は、巾着状の皮で餡を包み、ごま油で揚げたもので、巾着の絞った部分の皮は硬い。餡はこしあんで、ニッキ等の7種類の香料で香り付けされており、やや清涼感のある、不思議で上品な味である。
