学生時代重病を患い、厳寒の京都で数ヶ月間寝たきりになった。今から考えると入院すべきだったと思うが。当時そんな余裕もなく、考えすら頭に浮かばなかった。
最初のうち、どの病院に行っても原因がわからない。病状は悪化するばかりである。そんな私の窮状を見かねた畏友東山さんが神経の専門医へ連れて行ってくれた。先生曰く、あなたの病気は町医者には判断できない。私だからわかるのだ、と仰った。私は命拾いをしたのである。
病状が安定してからは朦朧とした状態で、よろよろと壁伝いに歩き、北大路堀川にあったその病院へ市バスで通った。
待合室で流れるインストゥルメンタルの"You can have me anytime"（トワイライトハイウェイ）。毎回かならず顔面神経に薬液を注射される。何十箇所も。そしていつ終わるともしれない感じ。深く差し込まれる針、その痛いこと。...
その後、いつも近辺にあった店でジャンボたこ焼きを買った。その味。あの鰹節。ほとんどのものを受け付けない体調だった(外食すると、きまって大抵のものは吐いた)が、本当に美味しかった。朦朧とした状態であり店名までは覚えていなかったが、まだ営まれている由。死ぬまでにもう一度、行きたい。
