10月下旬、宮古島を訪れた。各地から紅葉の便りが届く中、この島はまだまだ夏真っ盛りである。平良市街のホテルにチェックイン、コンビニで缶ビールを買い込んでビーチへと向かう。“パイナガマビーチ”は人工浜ではあるが、街中から歩いて行ける市民憩いの海浜公園である。ひと泳ぎした後は、ビールを飲みながら夕陽の刻を待つ。
ビーチのすぐ近くには、国道沿いにアイスクリームショップがある。ここは島由来の素材を“ごちゃまぜ”にした“ちゃんぷるSOFT”が人気で、フォトジェニックな店内装飾でも話題を集めている。マンゴー・ドライキウイ・ピスタチオをトッピングした「マンゴーマンゴー」903円をオーダーすると、５分ほどでできあがり。まずは“映える”店内にて記念撮影、その後ビーチに戻っていただいた。
旬の時期は過ぎているものの、色鮮やかなマンゴーは抜群の風味と濃厚な甘みがたまらない。そしてドライキウイの甘酸っぱい刺激が、口の中に広がっていく。さらにピスタチオも加わり、まさに“ちゃんぷる”で贅沢な味わいとなる。自家ブレンドという“PBBソフトクリーム”は舌触りがすこぶる滑らかで、爽やかな甘さである。
夕陽に染まる美しい海を眺めながら、ゆったりと島時間を楽しんだ。
