居酒屋に入ってまず聞かれることは「お飲み物は？」であることが多い。 糖尿病を意識する前は、食べ物決めてから飲み物頼むので待ってくれと言ってメニューを広げたものだから店員には嫌な客だったかもしれない。 食前酒シェリーを置いてある焼き鳥屋だってあるのだし、皆が皆まずビールというわけじゃないと思っていた。 糖尿病を意識している今は、極力醸造酒を避けるようにしているから、焼酎とかホッピーで通すことが多い。
それでもホッピーじゃ物足りない、こくのあるビールを飲みたくなることもある。 私はスーパードライのようなすっきり系のビールが嫌いでエイル系のビールが好きだ。 どうせリスクを犯して飲むビールならギネスを飲みたい。 アメリカでならサミュエルアダムスになるけど、大宮で生があるとも思えない。 そんな時に行く店がここだ。 大宮駅東口側だと大栄橋近くのパブHUBとここで生のギネスを飲める。 いずれもスポーツバーの趣があるが、パブHUBではカウンタで飲めないし、ギネスが微妙に酸っぱい気がする。 行くのはたいてい一人だから話し相手のバーテンダーが居るカウンタで飲む方が良い。
キングジョージのオーナーは日本語の達者な英国人の若者で、ジョージという。 そのせいだろうが金曜日の夜はどこから沸いたか英国や豪州の客が席巻し、席数に関係なく立ち飲みバーと化す。HPをみれば一通りのパブでのつまみや食事は揃っていることが分かる。まともなキッチンで調理している。 イングリッシュパブの定番フィッシュアンドチップスももちろんある。 白身魚はもちろん輸入物で、鱈じゃなく鱸の場合もあると聞いた。 古新聞を持参して包めば本場の気分も味わえる（笑）。
バーとしては飲み物の品揃えは豊富とは言えないが、シングルモルトやアイリッシュウィスキー、そこそこのリキュールも置いてある。 カウンター内にジョージが居ない時は日本人アルバイトがサービスする。 カクテル頼む場合は、こっちからレシピを伝えて作ってもらうこともある。 生ビールは、ギネス、ハイネケン、キルケニー、サッポロの4種類がある。 瓶ならもっと種類が多い。 それにしてもなんで英豪人はあんなにコロナビールが好きなのか分からない。 興が乗るとあっちこっちでテキーラの一気飲みが始まる。 私は一気飲みなら断然冷やしたウォッカだ。喉ごしの甘さが堪えられない。
ギネスに飽きて、もっとキックするものが飲みたい時もある。 せっかく好みのタンカレー（ジン）があるのにフリーザで冷やしているわけではないので、そんな時はマティーニは頼まないでジョージのレシピによるブラッディマリーを頼む。 できればあの唐辛子ウォッカ、ペルツォフカでキックされたいが、彼の白ワインとりーペインソースを加えた複雑濃厚なキックも良い。
変にキックされると、ここからスコッチやアイリッシュウィスキーが始まってしまう。 でも一杯一品ごとの現金払いなので勘定は安心だ。
