This is a memoir of the vegetarian cuisine I had at a quaint Japanese Ryokan on the same grounds as Kiyomizu-dera Temple (Yasugi City, Shimane Prefecture), which I popped into when I went to Shimane last fall. I didn't check the place to eat in advance, and I had planned to eat lunch somewhere else that day, but on my way back from visiting Kiyomizu-dera Temple, I saw a message that said, ``You can eat Buddhist vegetarian cuisine,'' and ``You can walk in.'' This caught my eye and I decided to rush in. The entrance is an old-fashioned wooden and glass sliding door. Since it's Ryokan, I took off my shoes and was led to a large Japanese-style room on the second floor that looked like a partition from a banquet hall. I had the lightest course, but it was clear that the dishes were carefully prepared, including sesame tofu (large!), Simmered dish, shinjo, kabayaki-style dishes, and even soba noodles. I think the price was around ¥2,000, but I was surprised to see that it came out much more than I expected. (The cost performance is very good.) On the way home, I saw the person who was cooking the food (my husband?), and he was a very nice person with a low profile and was very polite. I felt that his personality was reflected in his no-frills dishes. I'm glad I took the plunge and tried it out. It was truly a great vegetarian dish.
