[5 minutes walk from Tsuwano Station] Carp and trout swim in the pond inside the restaurant. The restaurant is also decorated with many old Imari wares from the late Edo period to the early Showa peri |
This was my first visit and I had the Uzumeshi set meal for 1,400 yen, which is one of the five most famous rice dishes in Japan: Sayori meshi from Gifu Prefecture, Fukagawa meshi from Fukagawa, Tokyo, Chushichi meshi from Ogawamachi, Saitama Prefecture, and Kayaku meshi from the Namba region of Osaka Prefecture. Looking at modern food, Uzumeshi seems like a frugal Local Cuisine (lol). What is Uzumeshi? At first glance, it looks like Ochazuke(boiled rice with tea)with dashi and wasabi, but hidden underneath the rice are finely chopped sea bream and vegetables. There are various theories about the origins of this way of eating, including that it was eaten during the Edo period when people were forced to live frugally, to avoid anyone realizing they were being extravagant, and that the ingredients were simple and it was embarrassing to be seen by others. I wish they would stock up on hand soap in the toilets!
