ベルギービールは色、味、香り、アルコール度数まで多様でバラエティに富んでいると言われる。多くがピルスナーで熟成するのが特徴。歴史はかなり長く、紀元前58年のシーザーによる遠征時にはすでにベルギー各地で造られていたという。その後、修道院時代や時の王の推奨などで多様なビール造られてきた。あまりに緯度が高いのでワインよりビール造りが盛んになったとも言われている。
さて、そのベルギービールはここ数年日本を席巻しつつある。本国では1000種類もあると言われているが日本にもかなりが輸入されている。日本橋のCOREDO2にあるこのベルギービール専門レストラン。450年以上の歴史ある名門醸造所De Halve Maanが唯一認めたレストランだという。ここでは100種類のベルギービールをそろえている。しかも日本初の樽生ビールも導入、さらにここだけという希少ビールも。
このDe Halve Maan（ドゥ ハルブ マーン）は水の都ブルージュにある。ビール造りの歴史は長いがブルッグス・ゾットという名高いビールを造っている。今回飲んだのがそのブロンド。美しいゴールドの輝き。フルーティーな香りで口に含むとホップが心地よい。旨みと酸味のバランスがとれ最後の渋みが心地よい余韻となる。日本の地ビールにはない気品を感じる。
つまみはベルギービールのピクルスと。フレッシュポテト＆トリュフ塩仕上げ。後者はオーダーしてからカットし低温で火を通し中はほっくり外を香ばしく揚げる。仕上げにトリュフ塩とトリュフを振る。ふっくらとしたポテトに風味が増すと思われたがトリュフが少ないのでそこまで極上ではなかった。まあビールがかなり美味なので救われたが。
料理は多彩。ベルギーで最も有名な名物料理のムール貝の蒸し料理各種やポテトフリッツ、シャルキュトリー、ビールで煮込んだ豚すね肉のオーブン焼き、牛肉のビール煮など。おそらくグループで訪問し、いるいろな楼理を食べながらベルギービールを楽しむのが良いのだろう。私は午後のひと時を時間調整も兼ねて利用したがディナーを控えて少なめにせざるを得なかった。
