知人がビール好きでぜひここのビールを紹介したいと連れてきてもらった。
場所は六本木。普段あまり来ない場所だ。なんだか人通りが少ない気がして寂しい。騒がしいのが好きなわけではないけれど景気が悪いのはあまりよろしくない。もう少しにぎやかになってほしい。
店に入るとさすが六本木、外国の方しかいない。香港に住んでいたときによく行っていたタバーンのような雰囲気だ。この寒いのにチューブトップだけの女性がいたりなんかして、別世界に来たよう。
奥の席に座る。ビールは知人におまかせだ。こちらは店名にある通り「ホブゴブリン」というイギリスのウイッチウッドにあるブルワリーのビールを取り扱っている。以前は数店舗あったらしいが、最近閉店してしまっていまは2店舗しかないらしい。
スタンダードな銘柄がこの日はないらしく、「ホブゴブリン ゴールド」からスタート。パイントで1,000円。知人は毎年イギリスにビールを飲みに行くほどのイギリスビール好きである。日本のビールはどれも同じでつまらないと言っていた。
飲んでみると確かに違いは分かる。モルトの味が強烈でこれを飲むと日本のビールは薄く感じそう。炭酸が少なくて、少しぬるめということもビールの味を強くしている気がする。
ちなみに食事のメニューはあまりなくてとにかくビールを飲む場所らしい。イギリスのポテトチップスをつまみにひたすら飲む。あとで注文したフライドポテトは太めのカットでこれがイギリス式らしい。カレーソースのディップがめちゃくちゃ辛くてびっくりした。
その後、「ホブゴブリン ダーク」「マーストンズ ゲストエール」など飲み終わるとどんどん知人が持ってくる。5杯くらい飲むともうお腹がいっぱいになってしまった。2.5リットル近く飲んでいるのだからそりゃあそうか。
自分としては途中で店を変えて、酒も変えたりするのかと思っていたのだが、本物のビール好きはやはりビールしか飲まないのだ。イギリスビールの美味しさはなんとなく感じられた気がするので、これからは積極的に海外のビールを飲んでいこうと思う。
