以前、中央合同庁舎第５号館の厚生労働省職員食堂と、第1号館北別館にある日豊庵で食べたことがあるが、今回は日比谷に昼過ぎに用があり、そういえば鯨が食べられる食堂があったと、その日豊庵の並びにある食堂を利用してみることにした。
建物の入口にガードマンがいて職質とかされそうだが、軽く会釈して入れば、何事もなくスルーできる。
中には受付があって、目の前に前に行った日豊庵が見えるが、あれ？ 今回目指す食堂が見当たらない！
受付の女性職員に場所を尋ねると、右通路先の関係者ゲート手前を左に曲がるとスグあると優しく教えてくれた。
礼を言ってその通りに進むと、あったあった！
中は正しく社員食堂然とした空間。お盆を持って好きな惣菜を取って会計。煮物や焼き魚など、一般的なおかずが並ぶが、昼ピークを過ぎているので、品数は少なめ。
だが、これら以外に注文できる定食類があり、こちらはカウンターで注文。その中に目当ての鯨ステーキがある。
少し時間がかかるとのことなので、先にレジで会計し、お茶を汲んで席で待機。
すると、出来上がったようで目の前に運ばれてきた。
イワシ鯨ステーキ膳¥１０００
サラダに味噌汁もついて、完全に定食といったフェイス。
で、肝心の鯨だが、イワシ鯨という品種のようだ。
ステーキという名前になっているが、熱々ではなくヌルい温度で、ポン酢的なすっぱショッパいタレがかかっていて、刺し身に近い。
食べてみると、魚というよりやっぱり肉というか、そこは哺乳類というしっかりした弾力ある食感。柔らかいがしっかり噛みしめると旨みが出てくる感じで、嫌な臭みといったクセはほとんどなく、新鮮な印象を受けた。
例えて言うと、魚だったらカツオかな。ちょっと鉄っぽいというか。レアっぽく焼かれているので、鰹のタタキ的なニュアンスもあるし。動物系の肉だと馬刺しほどではないが若干トロっと感じなくもなく、牛刺しが一番近いかな。
こういう味だとやっぱりおろし生姜が合う。刻みネギを添えて、オンザライス！
ちょっとご飯の熱が入って、より肉感が増した鯨肉はさっぱりした味付けとともにグイグイ米を食わせてくれる。
川口の鯨食堂亡き今、クジラ料理が食べられる場所として、このままあり続けてほしい。
