東京都区内で一番緑が多い所といえば、やはり皇居であろう。
皇居一周のマラソンコースが約５キロメートルというから、その程度の距離を隣家がぐるっと皇居を取り巻いていることになる。隣家の特権として、美しい皇居の庭園を借景できる。さらに、その特権を商売に利用することもできる。羨ましい限りである。
皇居の隣家の一つに「グランドアーク半蔵門」というホテルがある。われわれ庶民は皇居に立ち入ることはできないが、このホテルには自由に立ち入って皇居を眺めることができるはずだ。ところが、そう思って入っても、実はほとんどまともに見ることができないのである。ここは警察の関連施設ということで、皇居に遠慮したのか、皇居側のガードが厳しいのか、よくわからないが、見えるのは皇居の緑のほんの一部だけという構造になっている。
それでも、このホテルの１階にあるレストラン「パティオ」は、皇居に面し、天井までの大きな窓の向うは緑一色である。その緑に囲まれてガーデンテラスがあり、木漏れ日と薫風を受けて飲食を楽しむことができる。
参考までに、この店の向う３軒両隣を述べておこう。お向かいは、言うまでもなく皇居である。その両隣も、そのまた両隣も、皇居である。地球に果てがないように、皇居にも果てがなく、どこまで行っても皇居なのである。店の両隣は、左が東京FM放送。右が国立劇場、その隣が最高裁判所、そしてその先に国会図書館と国会議事堂が続く。この超重量級の錚々たる顔触れが醸し出す重量感溢れる雰囲気は、さすがにここが首都東京の中心であることを感じさせる。
この環境に惹かれてこの店に客が押しかけてくるので、ラッシュアワーの席の確保は容易でないが、その時間帯を外せば、ゆっくりこの重厚な雰囲気を楽しむことができる。値段はリーズナブルであり、味もサービスもそれに十分見合っている。他では味わえない上質の東京を手軽に味わうことができる場所として推奨したい。
