昭和53年の春、ある中学生がはじめて一人で外食をした。5歳から10歳まで親の駐在について海外で暮らしていた彼は一人で外食する機会がないまま中学生となりS進学塾の市ヶ谷校舎に通いはじめた。母親から渡されていた岩倉具視の印刷された青い紙幣を握りしめはじめてカレースタンドに入った彼の顔は緊張でこわばっていた。それでも何とか注文と支払いを済ませて、皿の上のカレーを平らげた頃には安堵と自信で胸が満たされた。それから学年と校舎が変わるまでの1年間、彼は毎週そのカレースタンドで同じカレーを食べ続けた。
半世紀弱の時を経ておよそ世の中の図々しさレベルでは最高峰に匹敵するジジイと化した今となっては信じられないが、あの頃の世界は不安と緊張、そして新しい経験を積むたびに感じる達成感に溢れていた。そして又、自分がこんなジジイになる日が来ようとは想像もしていなかった。
この席に座ってこの復刻王様カレー食べたらそんな記憶が溢れ出てきた。
それにしても、これを税別500円台で食べさせてくれるのもすごい。
