銀座線末広町から徒歩数分、妻恋坂というお洒落な交差点近くにある、カレー百名店「ベンガル」を訪問です。日曜日の夕方18時で、秋葉原の大通りはすごい人出だけど、この通りは割と暗いです。ここと「いっぺこっぺ」の明かりが目立ちます。
「ベンガル」は1973年創業なので、今年51年目の老舗。2018年に現在のお店に移転しているので、お店自体はまだ新しく綺麗です。
角切りビーフカレー 1300円
お店の名物という角切りビーフカレーを辛口でお願いしました。ここで迷うのは角切りビーフを2個のダブルにするかどうか。ビーフは好きだけど、＋500円で計1800円になるのでちょっと悩ましい。とりあえず1個で様子を見ることにしました。
数分でやって来たカレー。真っ白なお皿に平たく盛られたライスと、グレービーボートに入った黒褐色のカレー。早速ライスにかけて食べてみると、シャバシャバだけど野菜やスパイスがたくさん入っているようで、ザラザラした感じのルウ。ビターな味わいとスパイスの香り、そして少し酸味もあるカシミール風のカレーです。辛口でも辛さはほどほど。すっきりきりっとした辛さが爽やか。
牛肉は大きな角切りがゴロンと一個。ホロホロと繊維が崩れる柔らかさだけど、少し筋っぽい部分なので、ナイフで切りながら食べました。なかなか大きくて食べ応えあります。これは美味しくて好き。乱切りのジャガイモも大き目。
卓上には薬味が3種類。福神漬け、玉ネギのアチャール、青唐辛子漬けです。青唐は辛いし、玉ネギも良かったけど、福神漬けが一番合うと思いました。あと、ガラムマサラとカイエンペッパーもありました。それぞれ振って辛さと香りを楽しみます。
ライスは割としっかりボリュームがありましたが、カレーのルウもたっぷりで、ちょうど良く食べられました。
なかなか美味しかったですね。伝統ある昔ながらの味わいという感じで、ちょっと高級感もある美味しいカレーです。牛肉も大きくて良かった。もう一個食べるかは悩むところです。
