2020年4月のとある土曜日の18時過ぎに訪ねた。
日暮里駅を出て徒歩2分ほどの場所にある焼鳥店「笑元」。
それほど広くない店内は3割程度客で埋まっていた。
カウンター席に1人で座り「アサヒスーパードライ（中ジョッキ）」¥550を注文。サイズ的にやや小さめの生ビールで喉を潤す。
お通しは、ごま油とネギがかかった冷奴。ビールのアテには良い感じ。
大トロ〆さば ¥580：食べ応えのある大トロ〆さば。この店で作っているものではないと思うが、程好い酸味でビールには合う。
串を塩で注文してみた。店主らしき男性が無言で提供するのだが、一応説明くらいして欲しいと思った。正直、接客に向いていないのではと思う。
なんこつ ¥150：大山鶏のなんこつだと思うのだが、それほど美味しいとは思えず。何故だろうか。鮮度の問題なのかは不明。冷凍したなんこつをそのまま焼いているのかも、感じるクオリティ。
レバー ¥150：臭みはないレバー。ややレア目に焼いているが、こちらもインパクトに欠ける。どうしてだろうか。
ねぎま ¥180：地鶏を使っていないのだろうか。やはり鮮度がイマイチと感じてしまった。ねぎはちゃんと美味しいのだが、鶏肉がどうにも残念。
手羽先 ¥300：値段なりのクオリティという感じ。もうちょっと食べ応えがあると嬉しい。熱々の手羽先を食べてビールで流し込む。
ビール一杯と軽くつまんで帰ることに。ホスピタリティの低さもあって満足度が高まらない店であった。
常連客がいるので続いている店なのだろうが、この日食べた焼鳥はイマイチであった。
