昔からある西谷食堂。最近はおばあさん達の具合が悪いとのことでお休みしていたが、7月から再開した。あまり愛想はないが、そこがまた魅力のおばあさん達が切り盛りする。天とじ蕎麦を頼む。蕎麦は更科で自家うちらしい。暖かいつゆの中でもほんのりそばの香りがするな。つゆは伝統の濃いめの甘カラ味だ。やっぱり蕎麦つゆは濃いめが良いね。つゆはガツンとくるべきかと思う。天とじの天ぷらはエビだ。ああ、美味しい天ぷらだ。派手な天ぷらではないが、油も美味しい。店もおばあさん達も釜も製麺機もレトロ。岩見沢駅あたりに人がごった返していた昭和の雰囲気を堪能してはいかがか。

前回は温蕎麦だったので今回は冷たいやつにした。冷やしたぬき600円である。おばあさん3人が頑張っていたが、2人が体調を悪くしてしばらく休んでいたことから、あまり無理をせずにやってほしい。ツルツル系のおそばは短く切れているものが多いので、本格的にそば通を自称する人は許せないだろう。しかし、ここは人がごった返していた往年の岩見沢駅前と隣接商店街の栄枯盛衰を感じて食べる食堂である。甘辛のつゆにどっぷりお蕎麦をつけて、硬めの天かすを味わい、蕎麦湯で締めるというだけでよいのだ。結果的にうまい。でも2杯行けそうな気もする。
