[b: (Prologue...Business trip to Okinawa)] In July, after the rainy season, I was ordered by my new boss to go on a business trip to Okinawa. This time, I was happy to go... Naturally, I received jealous looks from those around me. [b:Even beast tamer needs rest, I told myself, and arrived. [b:Just in case], I had a meeting at the office, and in the evening, I had dinner with a local Izakaya (Japanese-style bar). I took a taxi from [b:my usual hotel] to the restaurant. No matter how you look at it, there are only houses around. Then, I saw a sign. I opened the door cautiously and found it was an izakaya. I was welcomed by the proprietress, who looked great in her apron. There was a counter and a large table. In the back, there was a tatami room with a sunken kotatsu (although there was no kotatsu...)-style table. It was a restaurant with a very interesting atmosphere, as if I was drinking at home. Apparently, the restaurant is run by someone from Oita. [b: (Elaborate food...)] We all toasted with draft beer. Then a large plate of food was brought out. It was the perfect snack, with soft-boiled eggs, okra, and wild vegetables. Tofu was also brought out. It had a texture similar to cheese. Around this time, the local customers started to shift to awamori. I didn't know much about awamori myself, so I waited for a while. A local customer gave me advice that it would be good to mix it with ice and water, so I decided to try it. This way of drinking it really suited me. Awamori also went perfectly with sashimi. Some people say that Okinawan fish is bland, but it was completely different. I was made to realize that my preconceptions were completely wrong. And the thing that surprised me the most was the squid ink chawanmushi. It looked pitch black and I wondered what it would be like, but it was really delicious... It was the first time I'd ever tasted it, but it was exquisite. I sipped the awamori. [b: (In addition to Okinawan Cuisine, there was also the taste of Oita...)] I was able to enjoy the taste of Oita at this restaurant. In the middle of the meal, they brought out a big serving of Oita's specialty fried chicken. It was well soaked in sauce and went well with the awamori. The local customers were also very happy. We also had rice cooked with seasonings and Ochazuke(boiled rice with tea). This was also really delicious. It was a nice accent. I was very satisfied and just drank the awamori. [b: (In summary... it seems to be a hidden gem)] This restaurant was like being at home, and I enjoyed the delicious food and drinks. It seemed like the local customers had never heard of it before. It was actually a hidden gem. I think it's more interesting for business travelers like me to enjoy Okinawan Cuisine, and for locals to enjoy Oita cuisine. I didn't know that awamori was so good. I didn't have a hangover the next day either. It was a great party. I'd like to return if I get the chance.
