The Shinjuku Gyoenmae area is full of small, cool restaurants. For Chinese food, there's Reika, Kogetsu, and Chef's; for Japanese Japanese-style meal, there's Shinano, Mitsuya; for Western Western Cuisine, there's Sucre Sale and Cera Vie Nagano; for coffee, there's TSUBASA COFFEE and All Seasons Coffee. The list goes on and on. When I visited Chef's 9 years ago, I arrived too early, so I had a beer at the nearby Italian Cuisine bar Artesia to kill time. On the second floor of "Artesia" is "La Toque", which means "to knock on a door" in French. I suddenly had the afternoon off that day, so I considered this place as a candidate, but I arrived at around 12:20, right at the peak lunch time. If you go there and it's full, you'll have to wait a long time. I called the restaurant at 11:00 on a whim, and the owner and chef, Kawamura Fumika, answered the phone. He made a reservation for just one person at 12:20 \(◎o◎)/! When I arrived at the restaurant exactly at 12:20, I was greeted by his wife, Naomi, who is in charge of the dining area. As expected, the restaurant was full! And it was full of women. I was shown to the only available table. If anything, it was not a lively place, but rather a sophisticated place filled with women. Kawamura Fumika worked at Hibiya Matsumotoro for 17 years, before going independent in 1991 and opening La Toque in Nippori. It later moved to its current location. For lunch, there is a choice between Lunch A for 1,200 yen and Lunch B for 1,750 yen. I chose Lunch A. There is a wide selection of hors d'oeuvres and you can also choose dessert and coffee, but I chose the country-style meat pate, pate de campagne. For the main course, I chose young chicken confit with potatoes and mushrooms. I also ordered a small carafe of red wine (1,020 yen). Naomi brought me a water pot and a wine carafe. Next came the pate can plate, which was accompanied by green salad, cherry tomatoes, pickles, and mustard. The red wine was light and slightly tannic. The pate can had a clean taste with little visceral smell. The vinegar in the green salad was light. Chef Kawamura also came out to the dining area and was very active. He brought me a warmed Mineya baguette. Apparently, before the restaurant opened, he thoroughly searched the phone book for bakeries, visiting each one and choosing Mineya. It is soft inside, salty and has a standard taste. Next comes the chicken confit. It is served with mashed potatoes, boiled vegetables, mushrooms and mustard. The bone comes apart easily with a knife and fork. The confit is well seasoned and has a good amount of salt. The wine goes down well and I am in a good mood. I am enjoying the time I have on my own, which feels great. I pay Naomi 2,220 yen in cash, thank Chef Kawamura in the kitchen and thank him for the meal.
