Enjoy "Meidai Uoke," glossy Edo-style grilled eels lined up in cedar barrels, in a Kyoto townhouse reminiscent of Gion.
"We entrust our spirit to eel to the single letter 'U'. " As the proverb goes, 'Five years to open, eight to skewer, a lifetime to grill,' the training required to master the taste of Edo grilled eel |
I made a reservation for this restaurant to enjoy the atmosphere of Kyoto with a friend. I was excited to walk through the streets of Gion for the first time, and found this restaurant in a corner of a back alley. We arrived earlier than the reservation time and were kindly shown to a seat on the second floor. We ordered the "Uoke 3-person serving" (11,700 yen including tax), which we had reserved in advance. We also ordered "Kiboraki" (liver grilled) (800 yen) and "hiyashi sake" (1,050 yen). We waited for the food while drinking sake. The empty guest room had suddenly become full. Moreover, we could hear foreign languages from each table. We were the only two Japanese people there. We wanted to eat the unique eel dish served in a bucket here. The dish is served for three people or more, but since we love eel, we were able to finish it even with two people. We were fascinated by the beautiful eel. The eel was split open from the back and steamed, allowing us to enjoy the Kanto-style flavor. Kyoto has an image of light flavors, but we enjoyed the normal seasoning. I thoroughly enjoyed the smooth eel, but judging from the reactions of the other customers, it was a bit strange. My friend seemed to be curious about it too, and the foreign tourists ate with puzzled looks on their faces. It is a popular restaurant, and the phone kept ringing off the hook for reservations during my stay. According to the staff at the restaurant, most of the customers were foreign tourists, and Japanese people were rare. To be honest, I don't think foreigners can understand Japanese Cuisine, which relies on subtle flavors. The chefs may not be motivated if they are only catering to foreigners. Since it is fully booked, cooking time can be calculated, and I think it is possible to follow the original "three-step" approach of eel restaurants. As a restaurant that represents Kyoto, and in the sense of passing on Japanese culture, I would like to ask for your continued patronage.
