The history of this restaurant dates back to the first year of the Keicho era, about 400 years ago. This area flourished as Maruko-juku, the 20th post town on the Tokaido road, where wild yam was grow
...n and used as medicine and food, providing a source of nutrition for the local people. The traditional taste has been passed down since Chojiya Heikichi opened Chojiya as a teahouse in this post town in 1596 (the first year of the Keicho era) to the current owner, the 13th generation owner, Shibayama Kaoru. Inside the restaurant, there are Japanese-style rooms named after people related to the restaurant, including the large hall "Hiroshige," where Hiroshige Ando's masterpiece "The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido" is lined up. The signature dish is the nutritious "Tororo Soup" made with wild yam, which is made with special care from the soil.
