Remarks |
In August, October, and November, the restaurant is closed due to the buckwheat harvest. There is no evening service on Sundays, so the restaurant may close early if it runs out of buckwheat. Established in September 2003 |
I went alone for lunch. I had always wanted to visit if I had the chance, and on this day I happened to have some free time, so I decided to stop by. The restaurant is about a 15-minute walk from Harajuku Station, in the middle of a quiet residential area. There is no big sign, and only a small sign saying "Tamawarai" on the shop curtain, so I was a little confused, but the staff member just came out and I was able to ask. I visited after 1:30 p.m., so I had to ask the owner if they had any soba in stock, but I was relieved to hear that they still had some. I decided to wait in the waiting room next to the entrance to be called. It was a hot day, but the waiting room was air-conditioned, so I was able to wait calmly. After waiting about 10 minutes, I was guided inside the restaurant. The interior of the restaurant was dimly lit, with the seats spaced apart, creating a calm atmosphere. As they do not serve Tempura at lunchtime, I ordered a coarsely ground soba and a refill of soupless soba. Soon after, a bowl of soba noodles is brought out, followed by a sake cup, soup, and condiments. The soba noodles are coarsely ground. They have a strong aroma, and are shiny and drain well. The soup is not too spicy, so you need to dip it in thoroughly. The portion is not that large, so you finish it in about five bites, but the refill I had ordered in advance arrives at just the right time. Just as I finished my refill and was starting to feel full, the soba soup is brought out, and I'm impressed that they keep a close eye on me. Overall it's a great restaurant, and I'd like to return if I get the chance.
