Facebook内のとある寿司関係のグループ内に最近、よく投稿されている方の記事を好んで読んている。アパレル関係の会社を経営していたが、一念発起して57歳で寿司修業を開始。いまは西麻布の寿司店で裏方を務めているという。会社はきちんとしてのことだから、計算されているのだろうとは思うが、この年から新しいことを始める胆力には頭が下がる。その彼が修業している店を訪れた。まだ開店間もない。もちろん、初対面。
付け台に立つのは子供くらいの年齢差の板長。横で知り合いと話しているのを聞くとさまざまな店で修業してきたらしい。彼が裏から顔を出してくれたのでご挨拶。酒肴は彼が作り、握るのは板長ともうひとり。板前修業は短くても、酒歴は長いだろうから、酒飲みの気持ちをわかった肴を出す。親しい客は彼の握りを所望することもあり、板長も許すらしいが、私は一見なので遠慮するのが筋だろう。次回の楽しみに取っておいた。同年代の新しい挑戦に勇気づけられる。
