I visited here for lunch as a candidate for a year-end party and to sample food. It had just been reported on TV or in the newspaper that the chef had won an award, so I walked through the gate full of anticipation. It was originally a pilgrimage inn, and the Japanese-style rooms of Ryokan are just private rooms, so there is a sense of privacy, but there is no sense of openness as most of the rooms are walls and you cannot see outside. The 2,000 yen course is a fusion of Japanese and Western cuisine, so I chose the 3,000 yen French cuisine course. The first hors d'oeuvre was delicious as expected. The second hors d'oeuvre was also delicious, but there was a lot of empty space on the plate and it felt like the portion was too small. Also, the soup was a potage of vegetables and had a very good taste, but it was too lukewarm. The three types of fried fish were excellent, using fresh local fish and fried crispy, but all had the same sauce. I thought it needed a little more ingenuity. The meat was sautéed sweet and fatty pork, topped with miso-flavored chicken, and it was so greasy that I couldn't eat it. I wondered what it would be like to layer different types of meat and different flavors. I think it's great that the ingredients are good and they try to create menus that make use of local ingredients. You can also see the ingenuity in incorporating Japanese elements. I think this young chef is working hard with enthusiasm, so I want to do more research, come back again, and try this chef's food again! I would like you to pursue a menu that makes you think. I'm rooting for you.
